That One Time I Tried to Drink a Gallon a Day

I tried the “gallon a day” challenge and learned two things:

  1. A gallon jug is basically a kettlebell.
  2. Your bathroom schedule becomes a part-time job.

But the real reason most people quit isn’t discipline—it’s taste.

The “Gallon” plan that doesn’t ruin your life

  1. Start with filtered water
If it tastes like chlorine, you won’t keep going. Pitcher/countertop/under-sink wins.
  2. Use the right container
A marked gallon bottle (or two 32oz bottles) keeps it realistic.
  3. Straw lid = fewer barriers
More sipping, less “I’ll do it later.”
  4. Add variety without supplements
Herbal tea with an electric kettle. Cold water with filtered ice.

The “Gallon a Day” System

  • Marked gallon bottle — The simplest way to track a gallon goal without apps; verify Made in USA on listing.
  • Water filter — Taste upgrade = consistency upgrade; start here before you “try harder.”
  • Straw-lid bottle — More sips, less effort; great if you forget to drink.
  • Electric kettle — Easy herbal tea ritual for hydration variety.
  • Ice tray/mold — Filtered ice is the underrated hydration hack.
