The Smell That Comes Out When You Run the Tap
You ever turn on the kitchen faucet and get hit with a smell that makes you pause mid-life?
Not “fresh spring water.” More like:
- “pool day”
- “metallic”
- “is something… living in there?”
That first moment matters because smell is data.
Why the first-draw smell happens
Common causes:
- first-draw water sitting in plumbing overnight
- a dirty aerator trapping gunk
- disinfectants like chlorine/chloramine
- hot water heater issues (if the smell is only on hot)
The calm checklist (no panic)
1) Run water 30–60 seconds
Especially first thing in the morning.
2) Clean the faucet aerator
Unscrew it, soak, scrub gently. You’d be shocked what hides there.
3) Flush cold before filling bottles
First-draw water is the “stale air” of your plumbing.
4) If it’s rotten egg / persistent: test
Use a home water test kit + review your local water report.
(If it smells “sulfur,” don’t guess.)
5) Add a filter where you actually use water
Countertop or under-sink kitchen filtration can improve taste fast.
